Fatehpur Sikri - the ghost city
About 40 kilometres from Agra stands Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned capital that Emperor Akbar built and then left. The reason is still debated - water shortage, political intrigue, or simply a change of heart. Whatever the reason, the city stands perfectly preserved, its red sandstone buildings and courtyards frozen in time. The Buland Darwaza, the highest gateway in the world, and the tomb of Salim Chishti, with its delicate marble lattice screens, make Fatehpur Sikri worth the trip.
